Rim rot.

My 2kf has been suffering from rotting rims for a while now. The alloy inside the well, around the spoke holes, has been flaky and disintegrating. I finally, after alot of searching, have managed to find a second hand set in reasonable condition.

So my question is this -is there anything I can do to my new rims to stop this happening to them aswell? Any info would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

hi were the old rims DID rims as these seem to suffer more than takasago rims ,what make are your new to you rims, steve

"New" rims are DID as well, unfortunately. Altho the front wheel has had stainless spokes fitted, which is good.

I've purchase alloy rims from a xtz660 for my xt600. My take on it was to use a wirewheel to clean up the rim, and then use clearcoat on the indeside of the rim. I hope the clearcoat helps to seal the spokenipples a bit and protect the alloy. I also use a bit of grease under the rubberband (dont know the actual english word for it) and seal up the valvestem with rtv/liquid gasket maker.

Clean them....

They should still last 10-15 years even with abuse..

You could maybe spray them with Waxoyl. Never tried this but can't see why it won't work.

Waxoyl seems like a good idea. I'll give them a really good clean up, a dose of waxoly, a put the tyres back on.

Its going to be a couple of years before I see the inside of the rim again, fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone.

hi if you use waxoly I would fit rim locks to stop the tyre slipping round the rim and ripping out the inner tube valve ,steve

I can vouch for that. My DiD rear is rotten the Takasago front i( of a 34L) s still fairly good. Noticed on fleabay someone in Thailand is doing new rim pairs for just over a £100.

I saw them when I was looking a while ago. I wouldnt want to be the first one to buy them. OK, they might be absolutely fine, but then again they might be total rubbish. Plus you still need spokes, and someone who knows what they are doing to build them up - worked out quite an expensive option.

I'd be interested to hear from someone who has had a set of these tho.

Set the spokes on and balancing you can fix yourself, did mine for the first time and with new tire on i only needed 5gram.

The aggro I am having trying to get a 2.50 x 18, 36 hole alloy rim, I may as well be the unwilling volunteer and blow £50 on the postage for those rims from Thailand. Each time I talk to central wheel components they "are expecting a delivery of rims in 4 weeks or so" . :(

hi have you tried here? https://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/ steve

Timus 9 Nov 2015 17:28

Or Talon?
I spoke to them about my wheels, but it came in at more than 500 quid for the whole job. More than the bikes worth.......!

He's on my facebook. No personal experience but seems to have very happy customers.
