Replacement Gold Rims
 

Hi, I am planning on rebuilding my wheels as the original rims are starting to show serious rot (34L). Any advice on getting suitable rims that look fairly original?

there's a chap on ebay that does rims 21 x 1.60 and 18 x 2.15 (not 2.50)
he does 2 shades of gold, not sure which one is closest to original tenere.

the rims are cheap but do come from Thailand so i dont know what they are like.

or you could go through Central Wheels and get some pukka excel rims and a nice set of stainless spokes.

my 34L wheels were not rotten but were very faded, I managed to find some 1VJ wheels that were in very good condition, so thats another option. it suits me as it gives me one set of wheels with road tyres and one set with nobblies.

Thanks, I am trying to keep the cost down so a good used pair from ebay might be the best option.

I'm in pretty much the same position with cracks around the spoke eyes.:(

Does the reduction in width from 2.5 to 2.15 make much difference on the rear wheel as the 2.5 width is very difficult to find?

Talon and Central Wheels do 2.5 width but then your talking £500 for a pair of built wheels with S/S spokes

2.15 shouldn't make any difference with a 120/80 or 130/80 tyre.

I managed to get a mint set of wheels from a KLR300 that are fitted with Gold Excel rims. I'm going to strip them and use these rims as donors for the XT wheel rebuild.

There seems to be a fair bit of disinformation out their from the wheel building companies. Hagon don't supply Excel rims but have told me that the rims are drilled specifically for each bike and so a rim from one bike won't fit another.

I spoke to Talon who do sell Excel rims and they told me that they are all pre-drilled at the manufacturer stage so as long as it's the correct diameter and spoke hole number, it will fit.
The KLR spoke lacing patterns is the same as the XT, rim diameter is correct and 36 holes, so if I can sort out the correct spokes I can't see the problem.

So purchase of the KLR wheels/rims + two sets of S/S spokes will give a total of about £250. Half the price of Central Wheels (If I can build them):thumbup1:
