The rearhub thing xt 600 1vj

Hello!

So I post this here because I do not have a clue :helpsmilie:

I described my problem on my movementpractice blog:

the broken rearhub conundrum

Movementpractice

if you feel like it have a look and give me a guess...

Gracias!:eek3:

Its worn out, common problem as the shoe eats away at the alloy drum making it thin & then it fails.

As you will know the part is no longer available (obsolete) so you have three choices.

1. Is to find another used one, XT550J, XT600Z 34L, XT600 43F any of the rear brake shoe ones will fit, but they could all be worn out as well (easiest option)

2. Change your whole rear end to disk brake (better in the long run) but costly.

3. Have it welded up & machined out (expensive solution)

Mezo.

thanks

thanks for the reply with all the details.....dude...
this is the second hub it happens to....did not look too bad but i could see the shoe diametre a bit small.
well..
I guess in my case I have to rethink a solution...
Would transforming into discbrake mean new swingarm?

Duxy 11 May 2012 21:41

I am in the process of converting an 86 XT600 to SM and have converted it to rear disc,it is a lot of work but worth it, I have the part you require but am reluctant to sell unless complete with wheel etc, don't have enough posts to contact you so what do i do.
if interested contact me if you can,it is in good condition as is the rear wheel and new tyre, bike has done a genuine 25k miles from new mainly road miles and some light trails, nothing more.

respetoh 12 May 2012 16:31

So good luck with your transformation, and wow only 25 k...mine had 80000k when I bought it.....

where are you?
I am in spain

Duxy 12 May 2012 19:07

I am in uk on Merseyside about 9 miles from Liverpool, I will post some pics when its done, going well so far though. good luck with finding what you want and getting it sorted.

rearhub conundrum

So I went to ask more people and it seems that not wear on the drum is the issue but wear on the axis of the little camshaft that separates the breakshoes.

To be more precise, the aluminium cast (which is the base of the brakeshoes) has a hole where the axis passes and there it has too much freeplay.

if I translate it from german, it would be something like "brake anchor plate"

And as a second reason, I found out, too much compression from the axle on the wrong parts of the hub.

In my mind it starts making a little bit more sense.

At least I feel a little bit less stupid after losing two good rearhubs...

Duxy:

Thanx for your posts,
I believe that the xt wheel is fine but the only difference is the chainline- my Tenere was the first one with electric starter (makes engine wider I believe) and good for 130 broad tyres

so I think it could work but am not sure.
I cant send you a private either since i am all new here.
Just to have an idea....how much would your wheel be? if you feel fine to post that here...

Jimmie 13 May 2012 09:39

If it's the axle hole in the anchor plate that is at fault, you could probably just ream the hole up a few mm's and press in a bushing of some sort.

Yep thank you I think thats a good idea, but I do not entirely trust this hub with the broken rib.
So, looking again for a spare one,
what I find are entire wheels including the brake,
also I spoke to a turner, and the fixing of the worn out hole would be the prize of half a used wheel.
Often i wish to have a nice garage that I could turn into a workshop.
But probably then I would be disappearing in there most of the time ;-)
