Rear brakecaliper - dustcoverring question

Hi.
I got a problem with assembly of my rear brakecaliper on my 1998 Yamaha XT600E.

I dont understand how the dustcover ring should be seated properly. I am able to put it over the dustcover but one of the ends gets placed over the other which makes the ring stick out a bit over the dustcover and its clearly visible when looking at the dustcover.

When I disassembled the caliper the ring wasnt visible, it seemed to be placed under the dustcover or if the rubber where placed over it somehow.
I have read the servicemanuals which only states the ring should be placed over the dustcover when the dustcover is seated in the caliper, nothing about how it should look when its placed properly or if there is a correct way to place it.
I have watched a couple of videos on Youtube which shows the ring being placed but in those videos the ring doesnt seem to overlap and it doesnt seem to be visible when its placed properly.

So what am I doing wrong? How can I place the ring properly?? is there any trick to this?

If ring is not seated correct in groove it will overlap, first measure ring and check its same size as old.

Thank you for your reply.
I didnt got any new rings in my rebuildkit so I am using the old one, could that be an issue?
Is the ring suppose to be placed over the dustcover, being seated between the metal and the rubber and pressing the dustcover down?

I have seen that video, the quality is abit low to really see how the ring should be seated but thanks anyway.

I have now figured out how the ring should be seated and tried the old dustcover and the ring fits perfectly without any trouble so it seems my problem is the ring doesnt fit the new dustcover.
