rear brake prob?

i just bought a new to me xt600, the rear brakes have a prob? they work, but you have to push the lever all-the-way down? i tryed bleeding them, with no results, they have new pads, but they arn't touching the disk? so my question is, is it the caliper or the master cylinder? much help apprecated

How does the pedal feel? Soft? Soft then solid? If you pump the pedal does it improve?

Pads not touching the disk suggests to me that the disk is very worn.

A soft pedal is usually air in there or old fluid with a lot of water in it.

As above...if spongey you have air in the system. Bleeding the back brakes for me is a bit of a bother. If it is not spongey have a look for corrosion on the locating pin. If it has corroded and become sticky it causes the diskpads to skew out presenting less surface area to the disk, hence less braking capacity.

thanks

thanks for you, trying to help, i tryed bleeding them again, no luck. the petal isnt really soft or spongy, its like theres nothing their, till its pushed almost all the way down. i went for a ride today, and tryed the rear brakes, not working very well, took forever to slow down, not stop. the rear pads are new, i think im going to try to take the caliper off, and see if its froze up???? i realy would like to have rear brakes. how would i tell if it was the caliper or master cylinder? when i try to bleed them, very little fluid comes out, and no air noise???
