Pre 1990 tank on a 90?

I'm in need of more fuel capacity for the 1990 XT600E 3TB. I work in a fabrication shop, so I can get parts cut with a laser, weld with tig, and bend to fit.

I'm curious as to whether or not a pre-1990, kick-only tank will fit my bike so I can use it as a base tank for retrofit to make a Tenere tank for it.

I only ask, because here in the US, 3TB tanks are about as rare as hens teeth, but older models are easy to come by. I'm also cheap, so buying a new Italian one for $350 and waiting 2 months to get it is pretty much out.

Not sure about the tank issue, but i wanted to say hi.

I just got a 1990 XT600E from my dad a week ago a love it. I also live in Charleston SC.

Really? I moved back to Kansas about a month ago! Good luck with the XT, the guys over on ADV Rider are pretty cool to hang out with, they have a dinner once a month. Trips to NC are about the best use of a weekend I can think of.

Interested in a Charleston, SC ADVdinner? - Page 12 - ADVrider

Have fun!

90 XT Tank Upgrades

I would be interested in any fuel tank tips as well. As a side note. Where in Kansas are you? I just bought a 1990 XT600 and would like to go on a few short (2-3 hour) rides locally, I'm in KC MO.

I'm actually about an hour from KC, and was considering moving to KCK in a few weeks. The wheelie picture was taken in Prairie Village in front of my brother's house. We need to meet up for some rides. :thumbup1:

Interesting, I plan to fab. an increased capacity tank or my 91 XT600 this winter, same general idea as you, and then build a glass fairing to cover the tank, house headlight, etc. Keep me posted on your progress.

Acerbis still sells plastic 20L tanks for our model, you can see pictures in my bikepics page (see my profile) they are sometimes available used on german xt600.de forum. Second hand price is about 150 euro.

An important issue about new tank is that this model has oil tank in the frame, and petrol tank should always leave a fresh air flow to refresh oil.. add a closed fairing or tank could make your engine temp too high, unless you add a radiatore somewhere.
