oversized tyre
Hi
I've been searching in the forum already but i couldn't find the answer, so i'm asking about this, can i mount in a 1998 standard xt 600 a rear tire with 140/80/17 sahara enduro 3 model, because they haven't got the 130/80/17, and the other alternative i got is a pirelli mt 60 130/80/17, so what do you recommend about the metzeler tire ? is it to wide for the rim or it is better the pirelli for being closer to the real rim measure(130/80/17) ? The metzeler salesman told me that the xt can handle the oversized tired for its motor but i told him i think it is more important the rim wide so then he told me about the supermotard with huge tyres in standard rims so, what do you think about this? i just got this 2 alternatives, any help would be appreciated |
Hola Javier,
the original tyre size is 120/90-17. The 140 probably fits but it has 2 disadvantages : it is too wide so curve handling is not so good, and the outer diameter is bigger so the final transmission is longer. I would go for the 130 if a 120 is not available. ------------------ Fred, XTZ660, Holland. |
Hi Fred,
how did you handle your XTZ 660 in Moroco with Desert tyre in dim 140/80 ? Was that "battle" or enjoying ? AnteK |
Hello Ante, it was great fun. Not especially good on the roads, due to the hardness of the rubber and due to the excessive width, but because the roads were hot no problems. Very good in sand and on the rocks though. And with 1,5 bar no punctures.

thanks for the info, in the end i could find it and bought a pirelli mt 60 130/80-17
the tire i have now is Duro brand and its tread is about 4 mm in the middle, do you think this tire can handle 3000 kms on motorway mostly but in off road i guess 500 kms ? |
It can if you really want to. Of course it's better and safer to go with a new tyre.
