Probably.

If JUST the white wires (from the generator to the regulator/rectifier) are getting hot, it's probable the regulator has shorted out inside and the generator is just working against a short circuit. If ALL the wires are getting hot (white, Red, brown and black) then you could have a fault (a short to ground) in the loom downstream of the regulator. If JUST the red, brown, black wires are getting hot, the regulator/rectifier has probably shorted out inside and the battery is trying to cook it - though this ought to have blown the main fuse.

if you have a multimeter you could check the resistances of the circuit.

Easiest thing is to swap the regulator/rectifier unit and see if it fixes the problem

Sounds like hi resistance are you sure the plug isn't corroded? Mine did the same thing and that was the culprit!
