on the road second gear problem

Hi from snowy California.
just developed, selecting second gear from first is a real battle on my 2003 600. I've swopped my spare clutch cable and its still the same. I can get second gear with low revs on the second or third go on a good day. Not sure if new clutch is needed since it pulls ok once second is selected. 47000 on the clock about 38000 abroad including so off road and on bad roads etc. Still the original clutch as far as l know. Any ideas welcome as l would like to sort it before going south across the border.
Thanks
Mojos

Does it slip out of second or is it just hard to shift (needs a lot of pressure, or does it crunch)?

I would check the clutch cable to make sure it's set correctly, and also do you have an original shift lever? I bought a nice looking aluminum one off Ebay and it's ridiculously hard to shift with it for some reason.

Hi Toast
Been out of wi fi for a few days. My problem is getting it into second. It doesn't crunch but the shift up is hard. All other gears are fine and the new cable is adjusted correctly.

Is there any play in the shifter shaft ? The other issue would be the gears not wanting to slip on the shafts inside to switch gears. If it goes hard enough the shift fork can bend and you'll have some grinding when running second(the first gears won't completely disengage with enough clearance. Try a different oil for one change ,maybe add a half cup of ATF to clean any grunge that may be causing sticking inside. Drain the oil shortly to not leave the ATF in for too long.
