Oil level after oil/filter change

Hello all XT'ers. I just did an oil/filter change on my 1991 xt600. I drained off 2.5 L of old oil. My manual says to add 3.0 US QTs .I did that. When I checked the level the dipstik(not me) was dry.I'm reluctant to add more oil until I find out if it's necessary. 2.5L of oil is a lot IMO for a motor this size. Before I changed the oil the dipstik read in about the middle. Is my shop manual wrong? I'll let it sit overnight and bleed it again at the filter housing.

oil level

Hi
What you need to do to check the oil is take it for a short ride about 10 miles
should be enough, then recheck the oil level, should be able to see it on the stick. All ways check the oil after a run on the XT. hope thats helped.

Thanks for the replies.

Well..after all that . I took it for a burn and checked the oil level when I returned....sheesh NOW it shows full! .It must be the way that dry sump thingie works. Not only that it sure felt good riding. Now if the weather will cooperate a bit.
