Oil in the airbox

Hey
On a 3AJ - how much oil should there be in the air box? Should oil be coming out of the rubber valves at the bottom of the air box? It gets kind of dirty after a while.

Thanks

there shouldn't be any oil in the air box.
since the breather pipe of the crankcase is connected to the air box, this is where the oil is coming from.
maybe there is too much oil in the engine. perform oil change and measure quantity. should not exceed 3 l (min. 2.7 l).
if oil level is o.k. but there is a lot of oil in the air box, maybe piston rings are worn out, which will cause too much pressure in the crankcase.
you can extend the valves at the bottom of the air box with a rubber pipe. let the pipe end somewhere above the inside of the drive chain, by this you get extra greasing of the chain.

When I opened the airbox there were no pools of oil or anything, just that the walls had like a thin film of oil on them, as if "oil vapour" had been sprayed inn via the breather pipe. Is this NOT how its supposed to be?
Somebody mentioned that this was to bind any fine dust that makes it through the airfilter. Is this right?

thanks

Are you sure this isn't oil that has dribbled off of a freshly oiled air filter? Mine always has a little oil in the bottom after I oil mine, and it often times gunks up the airbox drain.

o.k., just a thin film of oily vapour is quiet normal, don't worry. reason is -as mentioned above- oil from the foam air filter and from crankcase.
just clean it from time to time.

A few time ago I found a lot of oil inside the air box of my 2000 XTE. I assumed I was due to excess of oil inside the engine. am I right ?

hi everyone, my XTE has a paper filter, i thought they were supposed to be replaced, not cleaned?you can blow them with air now and then but no oil.
good idea about the breather pipe to the chain, mine also has oil in the airbox,so its only wasted otherwise
