oil change intervals

I've used the search function but could not find any good info on this.
My manual says 6000km but the previous owner always went 2000kms.
Is 2000kms excessive?
I do about 50% on road and 50% offroad in a fairly hot climate.

Mike.

I wouldn't call it excessive..protective maybe?

how many km or miles does the clock show?
has it recently had a new piston or cylinder work? how long ago?

hi mike,
every 12 months if you don't do many miles/km a year, 6000 km is fine for normal use if your off road use includes a lot of river/wet work i'd drop the oil and filter change down to 4000km if its a hot and dusty climate i'd be keeping an eye on the air filter too.

Hmmm … my TT600RE is supposed to get new oil every 10.000 km. It holds apprx. 3 liters of engine oil…. Is the oil capacity in the XT models less than 3 liters?

Vdubster, if I may wander a little off-topic.. how is off roading in BC? Are there good riding areas that are still open or is everything getting shut down?

Norwp, the xt is just around 3ltr to, my manual says 10k km to on my xt.

One thing I advise.... MAGNETIC OIL PLUG SCREW!

The bike has 18000km on it and is all original. It's a 1990 model e start.
I'll probably end up changing it at 4000km this time and maybe get a oil sample tested. Oil capacity is 2.7 liters. I've been using 10w40 for now. Previous owner would run 20w50 in the hot summer months. I haven't really had a reason to switch, it doesn't burn any oil.

Biking offroad in BC is still really good, barely any area's have been closed in comparision with the almost unlimited terrain across the province. I wouldn't give it up for anything!

Mike, great to hear and beautiful pictures.

If you get the oil tested, please share the results. Yamaha seems to recommend either 6.000 or 10.000 km oil change interval on the same machines…. A bit confusing..

Hi Vando, great idea. Where can I get one for the XT?

Hey there... check this link:

Magnetic Oil Plug Kit Yamaha TT600 XT600 TT600R TTR600:eBay Motors (item 400059952688 end time Jul-12-09 11:17:10 PDT)

I don't know if it'll fit most modern XT frames that have the the oil tank on built into the frame...

Guess a quick message to that seller or a part cross reference would help out?
