Newbie XT600E Questions and intro

Hi to all on this thread,

Im new to the XT and bought my first 600e a month ago, a 2002 in blue with 15k miles and a slightly rusty frame (winter project). Located in NE England

Jobs Done:
Oil and filter change
Cleaned K&N ait filter and oiled (came with bike)
Second hand Stainless header
New Delkevic connector pipe and can

To Do List:
Renthal high enduro bars
New wide footpegs
Carb refurb kit with new seals, needles and jets

So thats what i have planned but i do have bigger ideas, a few questions to help if you dont mind

1) I head that wheels from a GS500 will fit to the 2002 XT, has anyone done this successfully and got sizes of spacers or suggest an alternative cheap supermoto fix?

2) Can you fit an alloy swing arm from a Tenere to the XT in an attempt to drop a little weight and improve rear feedback.

3) As im new to the XT are there any pitfalls that i might be heading for? i have dredged the forums and sites and seen alot of opinions and suggestions but alot of contradictions and arguments also :helpsmilie:

4) Sprocked setup? and good/bad experiences?

and finally....

5) For off road (TRF Member) i have been looking at a decent 80% trail tyre but with the rear being 17" our options are limited. Ihave narrowed it down to Pirelli MT21's. Again, any experiences.

Eventually id like to produce a step by step guide including what i have done to my XT for anyone in my position with as much info as possible.

I just hope there are still some XT owners with the enthusiasm that i seem to be contracting!!!

Thanks in advance bier

I would upgrade your rear spring and may be stiffen up the front with spacers. The suspension is way too soft on these. Especially with luggage.

Standard gearing is 15/45 I think. It can take one more tooth at the rear for a slightly better top speed without sacrificing acceleration.

Fit a fuel filter. And remove the filter in the carb under the float bowl. It clogs up.

Make sure you know how to check your oil level and check it often. These bikes will not forgive low oil..

I did a prep page on my blog for this bike about 12 years ago lol.

Tenere swing arms are steel, only alloy one they made was on the 34L-55W drum brake setup.

most critical issues is the run of the chain, if wheel crown carrier sits too way out, it will be difficult to sort out.

i was also worried about the steel swingarm, but honestly, even on pirelli supercorsa semi slicks, it handles fine down to peg grinding angles.

best cases scenario you might save 1kg,

would invest energy on a good rear shock instead.
