New owner, but a familiar problem!!

Hi to all, looks like a very well informed and organised forum.

I've just bought a "project-Ha!" 1984 43F XT600. No real problem other than at some point the 43F motor was replaced with a 3AJ motor. I didn't pay too much attention at the time of sale when I noted the lack of a drive chain, but after reading the threads from Rob XT600 and Redroadster, and after squinting down the line of the chain run, I now know why. DOH!

Redroadster, could you please send me some pictures of the work you did with the output shaft? I would be most grateful for anybody's comments in this area. By the way, it's definately a 43F frame.

From what I can tell from the detailed stripdown today, I don't think the motor transplant was ever successfully completed. I have a mish-mash of 43F components and some 3AJ components.

The loom looks like the original 43F but I do have the 3AJ right hand control and associated wiring and solenoid. Does anybody know which of the following componenets I should have, and are any interchangeable between the different motors?

Rectifier - I have a 34L - A0 which I think is a 43F component
CDI - Marked up as 34L-50 - Again I think this a 43F component

Carburettors, currently marked up as 43F together with the airbox. Although I do have a complete 3AJ airbox as well. Does this fit into the 43F frame?and does it work with the 43F Carbs?

Is the revcounter on the 3AJ electronic? as I cannot see where the mechanical revcounter cable/drive attaches to the 3AJ motor?
If so, What else am I going to have to find to get the rev-counter working?

Loads of questions, I know, and this is only my first post!! what a cheeky git I hear you say?

Thanks in advance

Good luck with your little project.:thumbup1:
These bikes are generally fairly easy to work on and sort out - if you know what you're doing.

There's lots of info on here - if you can't find what you are looking for just ask!!!

the airbox wont fit but the rectifier should be ok
if it still got the 43f main loom its going to need modifying to use the electric starter switch on the handle bar.
i've put a completly different rear end on my 97 bike wheel spacing can cure a lot of alignment issues:thumbup1:
the rev counter is elecrtonic

Thanks for your comments, looks like it's going to be quite a project. does anyone know where the feed for the revcounter comes from? is it the cdi?

wolfzero 10 May 2009 23:22

yes its fed off the cdi box

If its a 3AJ motor the rev counter is cable driven from the cam. There will either be a drive on the rocker cover on the right hand side or it may be blanked off.
Is it a 3AJ engine or does it just have 3AJ stamped on the cylinder?
All air cooled XTs from about 89/90 use the 3AJ cylinder and usually a 2KF head.
To find out what engine you have you need to read the first letters from the long engine number.

Thanks Bolla, the main engine number has mysteriously been filled with filler at some point?, the number on the side is 3AJ, and there does appear to be a 2p sized black plastic plug on the top right of the rocker cover. does this unscrew?

Hi fatbloke,

Wolfzero,

for the love of god don't show us any more.

Tedmagnum,

Yeah, when i found that I just looked away and pretended it never happened. The V5 does say engine number - not known. So yeah, I don't know.
