New guy here trying to sort out '89 xt600 Carb Troubles

Hi Gang,

I've got an 89 xt600 that I've had for 2 years and haven't been able to get the carb dialed right yet. It's been good enough to ride but at wide open throttle (and close to it) it sputters and hesitates, especially when I have a passenger. I've tried some slight variations in the main jet, increasing the float level a little, have new boots and can't detect any air leaks. The bike is stock except for the baffles are removed from the factory exhaust.

Should I continue to experiment with the main jet and float level or should I play with needle height? If so would it be on the left or right side?

Thanks in advance!

PK

Have you checked or adjusted the second side opening to the service manual specs?

Going up to 125 or 130 main in the secondary should take care of it if it's needing more fuel otherwise going down to a 118 will lean it out . All you can do is make sure everything is flowing as it should , clean air filter(take the baffle out of the airbox intake) and you have good fuel flow .

Beyond that it could be an electrical issue that's effecting timing some.

Per a dynorun, my bike (as with most) are rich at WOT.

People even lean out the WOT throttlesetting on a FI wr250r after removing half the airbox to upen it up, even with an aftermarked exhaustsystem fitted.

Ebay has cheap rebuildkits, the ones for the never models include just about every moving part.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll be back with the bike this weekend and will try your suggestions. I realized that the manual I have is for 1990-95 models. Is there a PDF online of a manual for 1989?

Thanks again,

Peter
