My New TTR600RE
 

Hi People

I’m now the proud owner of a 2003 TTR 600 RE with only 3.5k on the clock, she’s in beautiful condition. The only sad bit is I’ve had to trade my fzs600 yam for it :( that was a cracking bike as well. I finally had a dream come true last year when I took her round the ring, now it gone.

This is the first off road bike I’ve ever had! Was a bit odd as well on the test ride, turn the throttle and…and… well, it moved a bit :) I’m sure I’ll be very happy with it. Just a shock after all that HP on tap

I am looking forward to converting it to a true overland bike now :) I’ve got my shopping list of stuff that I need and I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions for you lot…

I brought a TTR from the IOW, a few years ago, spent a small fourtune getting it all ready for an overland trip. Took it down to Morroco and back on a two week trip around 5K, realy great fun, great in the mountains and good ground spped on the black stuff..

Hi just to say Im five months and 21'000km (bike has +45'000km on her) on the road, now in Nairobi on my 04 TT600RE great bike but I know about the lack of HP! Load her up with a good rack and the world is yours!

I see you went for the same panniers I’m going to buy! They look much better than the thin Zega rubbish from Touratech.

i have some questions about product codes...

One thing I’ve been having a hard time finding is a “good” racking system. I looked at the site you brought from, is this the correct product number for the rack ?? it doesn’t look as deep

Price: 219.00 Euro

Reason I ask is all the stuff on this site is for the XT-660

Also that page says….. Strong rear rack with an extra order. Do you have the product code for rear rack ?

My last question is, do you have the product code for the fitting kit for the panniers ? I can’t seem to find them :(

what tyres do you have on your TTR?
they look rather off-road orientated, did you use them on roads too?
how long do they last?

I am thinking of the right tyres for touring europe and morocco, on my TT600RE.
I like the Metzeler Karo, but worried that they wouldn't last long, if riding on tarmack.
also considering the Metzeler tourances, wich are rather road orientated but people say they behave well on off-road trail and small stones.

difficult to find the right compromise i guess...

Agreed, that is a very tidy looking bike: you asked for questions (and you are getting them!), so how do you find the TTR for oil consumption when riding hard and/or in hot weather, and how many miles/km have you got on the clock?

i will try to answer all questions in one post....

As for the OTR pannier system.
I used Touratech panniers on my bmw r1150gs (crashed, total-loss) and r1200gs (sold it last week after 47kkm), and the off-the-road panniers are same or less thick aluminium. I must admit that the the TT panniers feel more solid, especially without cover, not sure if it is the construction or the material. But with the lid on, the OTR rack and pannier mount system is very solid, but not more than TT. The fit and finish are certainly not metal mule (they are expensive!) or TT or Hebco&Becker level, but so is the price...

To be honest, i bought the OTR system from the website, and next time i probably would spend a bit more and buy Hebco&Becker panniers with it. on the other hand, spending a bit over eur. 600,- for a pannier system AND luggage rack of this quality is not a bad deal.

In my experience OTR need some improvement on the aftersales part. But the owner is an experienced TTR owner/driver. currently they develop a very nice XT660R rally version (big $$). But the perfect overlander me think.

As for oil consuption: zero, nada, nothing. Being a bmw 1100/1150/1200 boxer owner, this is really something i have to get used to :cool4: , bike has 5000km on the clock. So far i did some long highway stretches and some allroad/offroad tracks. No experience in very hot weather yet. Before i go i have a few weekends with long distances and some offroad tracks.

As for the tires: i had an off-road trip and got these worn out tires from a friend, don't know the make/model, but they are scary on tarmac :rolleyes2:. Few weeks back i changed them for MT21's with heavy duty inner tubes. It was my first tire swap ever (bmw driver...) and it took me about 6 hours for both wheels, and three puctures in the rear innertube :censored:. I really thought i needed to do this once before leaving. (lesson learned: there's a trick for everything and brute force not a good thing :()

Next time i probably get T63's, more durable, bit less on wet tarmac compared to MT21 (not from personal experience). I got the MT21's because i liked them on both tarmac and gravel (I drove with a group for three weeks in Peru on a XLR650, loved the bike!!)

Also not sure if i keep the heavy duty inner tubes, they are very hard to put in the tire, imagine this on a wet, muddy dangerous road somewhere out back.... need some advice on this, there was a threat a while back about slime stuff you can put in the tube. I need that so i can always keep on going and go to a save place to repair tire (good advise from a friend and experienced overlander).

I bought the bike and tires before i decided to quit job/ lease my appartment and GO. Wanted to use it initially for the occasional all-road/offroad trip. Turns out that the bike isn't a bad choice.
(at some point i probably regret the kickstart only....) but i see no point in start all over again for an XT, f650 or KTM lc4 Adv. and it saves a lot $$ in parts, shipment, insurance, carnet etc.

Too bad honda XLR650 (first choice!) or Suzuki DR650R are not available in Holland.

have you any thoughts on an extra windscreen? i'm still looking for one.

In terms of economy, I get between 20 and 24 kpl. Mine uses a bit of oil now (50,000 km). I would go for the OTR rack as it is 20mm tube, one piece, has pillion peg mounts and bolts directly to the rider footpegs. My set up has done approx 80,000 km no problem (I have TTR + TTRE, wife has TTRE.)

nationalcycle.com and I got it from M&P in UK. I forget the model. Obviously it wasn't designed for the bike but it worked. It was OK on the road too but it did cause a bit of 'lift' at 80 mph in the wet on the autobahn - enough to have an aquaplane. That was probably down as much to the high front mudguard and the lake on the road though.


For slower touring and offroad it was fine and the screen can be angled far enough up so your chest does not hit it when standing. It also a 'pop off' so if you go over the bars you don't impale yourself. About 60 quid as I recall. A bit of faffing to make it fit but it worked fine and saved paying stupid money for the pukka thing.

...have seen that one before. i think i saw this TTR on the german ttr site with pictures of the ttr meeting 2007. i hope this meeting wil be held in 2009, would be nice to meet other (international) TTR owners.

screen looks good, although a little high. transparant is good also.
Kedo sells MRA screens with dark grey color (don't no how to call this in english).

i'll try to build something myself first.... still got three months before i go... :mchappy:.

Dark grey = "smoked" (usually).

From earlier discussion of fitting windscreens, some bikes have managed a good fit with universal screens, such as the spitfire:-

That was probably me, I was at the 2007 TTR treffen in Wilsleben. My screen is a Secdem "pare brise" model for an XT600. Not cheap £80.00 ish. I got mine from Baglux in wales mail order. Get the code from the Secdem web site and they should be able to order for you.

* i fitted the black iron thing different on the panniers than standart: i didn't like the flexibility with using the original holes. (sorry, can't explain it better, but when u are working on it you'll see what i mean.

Did OTR supply the longer bolts, or did you give up and get them yourself?
And, how much longer were they, just the width of the stand (about 5mm) or a bit longer

The bolts should come from OTR, they will be difficult to source elsewhere due to size/length.
I would be careful modifying the rack in case you weaken it, the OTR rack is probably the strongest available for the TTR/RE, so it makes sense to keep it that way.

I’m not modifying the rack, it’s just come with bolts the right length that fit correctly on the rider pegs if you don’t have a centre stand, I do have an OTR stand; so, they’re a little bit short. I think Sanderd had the same problem, because he’s also got an OTR stand. We’ve got an engineering place round my way, just saves getting them sent from Germany.

Also, those two aluminium panels that came with the fitting kit, I assume there’re for strengthening the inside of the panniers where the mounting points go. Do you recon it’s OK if i use JB Weld for sticking the plates on the insides? Forgive me for asking stupid questions, I can’t figure out the German instructions.

I used the bolts supplied and also had the OTR centre stand. No problem with them being too short. Maybe mine were different. If you have trouble working out the fitting PM me, mines been on and off numerous times on different bikes.

I’m not sure yet, it’s still in the box. Will measure the bolts over the next couple days and PM you the size. will also get round to fitting the crash bars as well, they are still in the box. Not even looked at them yet :rolleyes2:

yes, the aluminum plates are for strengthening. perhaps glueing them makes it even stronger. didn't do that myself.
