My leg aches....
 

From trying to start my 2001 TT600R. I am therefore after some suggestions before I resort to the tedious removal and complete strip of carbs etc. I know a lot of you out there are rather knowledgable on these matters, all suggestions welcome. It WAS running fine but then refused to start one day, it wouldn't fire properly and whilst kicking would occasionally splutter and some times kick back, ouch. I have had the bike since new so I know how to start it. Yesterday I managed to get it running by winding in the idle screw to lift the throttle slightly, but when running it revved really high then eventually settled.
When you touch the throttle it revs sky high and takes about 10 seconds to settle back down (glad I wasn't trying to ride it). I suspected that maybe the primary carb slide plunger was sticking, took the top off to observe and it seems fine.
Could it be a problem with the secondary carb slide or diaphragm? I know these dont normally operate until you pull the throttle to a certain position but before I start to strip her down I thought I would ask if anybody has suffered similar symptoms.

With those symptoms it does sound like one of them is sticking..

Is the cable moving freely ?? Does it snap back onto the idle screw on the carb ??

I think you're going to have to remove the carbs and check that the the plungers are closing and that the diaphrams dont have any holes in etc.

Im not 100 eprcent sure how different the carb, and carb setup is on your tt compared to my 84 xt, but they are actually very simple carbs to work on.

I was a little hesitant too after reading about these carbs, but took mine apart once, and found its really easy to clean.

Now jetting and stuff I dont know... but a stock carb I wouldnt be afraid of!

clean your carb bowl and jets(pilot and main) and report back. my 84 is a bear if things arent exactly right and you dont kick it JUST so, but thats just my bike. I'm still getting aquainted with her, and loving her more than my ex fiance.

Thanks for the replies. I have stripped and rebuilt TTR/TTRE carbs before, its the removing the carbs bit that bothers me, you have to strip the back of the bike and drop the subframe out of the way to gain enough clearance to remove them, then remove the cables, hoses etc. Wondered if the syproms point towards a problem that can be accessed from the top without removing carb? Thanks.

By now you could have fixed the problem :innocent:

The easy way, often makes you take the tough way in the end, but know you've spend extra time on the easy way =)

How big of a job is it to removed that stuff, i mean, how long does it really take when you have you're tools and have a go at it :)

Check to see if the carb rubbers are split, if split they suck in air the bike will be very hard to start, if it starts it will draw in air and rev high.

Thanks for the replies, I took the carb out yesterday and the inlet rubbers disintegrated! I assume they were letting in air (rubber looked perished). Anything else I should look out for? I will be stripping the carb soon anyway, as it's now out of the bike. Thanks guys.

Think you can find some rubbers on e bay.......ha ha I said rubbers....
