monoshock overhaul
 

hi there my 1985 43f rear shock is starting to get a little sad and the damping is going. ive just been to see the guy who advertisers on ebay (brooks suspention) ,he can overhaul it for 100 pounds if the damper rod is ok or 150 ish if a new rod is needed. the guy is sound and realy helpfull,but before i decide on haveing it done has any one got any other surgestgens , hagons are 275 (ouch), has anyone got one on , a couple of mates have these on road bikes and they seem fine . what about later xt,s or tt600 ,ttr600 . there are a lot of early xt shocks on ebay but they are 50ish pounds plus postage and probably no better than mine ?c? zigzag

search for ohlins and you will find info about this... ohlins from TTS is the best option

the rebuild is your cheapest option, and apparently the OE shock can take more abuse than aftermarket shocks, but I dont suppose thats an issue if its just used on the road 1up or not loaded up.

if you get it rebuilt let us know how the refurb shock feels. he did my elefant shock and it know handles bumps mid corner with out any fuss, previously it was a right handfull.

Yep - I had my shock (34L) rebuilt a couple of years ago for the princely sum of 100 Euros. It came back 'as good as new' and has been going strong ever since. Word is the OE shock is better (i.e. tougher) than cheap alternatives like the Hagon. Mine did a year-long trans-Africa trip no trouble before time finally killed it (internal seals between the oil and nitrogen gave up).

hi there i am taking the shocker to be rebuilt tommorow the turnaround time should be up to 2 weeks depending if a new damper rod is needed , so its back to the zed for a while its in semi retiment now , i try not to use it in the rain now , so with the weather were having the word b******s springs to mind :frown:. zigzag

hi there bad news on the shocker rebuild the guy who is doing it has had it for 2 weeks and all his eforts to dismantal it have not worked he can not get the alloy part that has the seal in it apart from the steel body . so he is going to put the spring back on and i will pick it up on thursday all being well , it was useaball before, but he has had to drill a hole to get the gas out which was going to have a valve in it to re gas it so now there is no gas in it only oil . the guy was really sorry but just could not get the thing in bits . so it looks like it may have to be a hagon ,as a secondhand shock do,s not seem a good move . XT FROG you say you got yours rebuilt, was this a standard shock and did the guy have any hassle doing it . has any body else had a 1985 standard shock rebuilt and where? zigzag :(

Not an XT shock but I had the suppoedly unrebuildable showa off my VFR rebuilt by Revs Racing at Halesowen.

hi there the whole rebuild thing was a non starter , ive just ordered a hagon , the bikes been off the road for 3 weeks now , so i needed to get it sorted , i may look in to it again but its unlikly anyone wiil take on the job because somebody has already tryed . :(

The guy had no problems with mine at all - its the standard shock for a 1984 34L. Bizarre.

thanks for the reply xt frog the guy seid he could not get the damper rod part out of the main body. he also drilled a hole close to the top to depresserise it he was going to tap this hole and put a valve in it to regas it up again, yours prosumably has a valve tapped in to it now somewhere, ive now just bought a hagon shock 375 pounds (ouch) ive still got the old shock , me and a mechanic friend are going to have a go at pulling it in bits , but where the guy drilled a hole on the body just below the top mounting eye, he did not think it was thick enough to tap into ,so i think a nut would have to be welded on to screw the valve in to, also you can see the insides , a kind of rubber thing is on the inside of the hole. like i seid i dont think anybody else would take the job on now, so if we can get it in bits i will see if we can change the oil and re gas it some how but ive no idea what pressure it takes so like i seid all in all it was a non starter. zigzag
