Mixing Oil types?
 

As i have no idea as to the effect of mixing different oil types (i.e synthetic, ester based and mineral)can anyone give me an idea as to the viability of mixing these different oil types. The reason I ask is I have no idea what the previous owner used in my Xt600 and am looking at topping up with an ester based Motul oil.

If you have no idea what was in there you should change the oil now.

Besides, personally I would do a full oil nad filter change as a minimum when buying a bike. Who knows how long it's been since the filter / oil was changed. Also a good time to take the filter apart and inspect for metal bits.

Topping up with a different TYPE of oil is not recommended. No problem to switch types on change, (they say) although personally I confess I would change again within a thousand or so for safety. But then I'm pretty anal...
