Main Stand - Yes or No ?

I have never had a main stand fitted, but every time I have a puncture or when the bike is loaded I curse myself for not having one. Has anyone of you guys ever used one ? Any Ideas or comments are welcome as I am about to go out and get one.

Txs.

Let us know how you get on cos I'm thinking about getting one as well.

john-l 29 Aug 2001 16:14

I'm about to get one sent over from Germany. the Polo motorcycle equip. sells ones that fit the xt600e so I figure it will fit my tenere. Does anybode know which of the xt600e models has the same frame as the '89 xt600z tenere.

The XT and Ténéré were effectively the same motorcycle until 1990 except for the Ténéré's uprated cycle parts, suspension and bodywork.

After 1990 they started using a different frame for the XT.

So you _should_ be OK using a centrestand for an '89 XT for an '89 Ténéré.

sorry john,
but you are not right.
XT600 87-89 (mod. 2KF/NF) has a different frame then tenere.
reason: the 2KF uses the old crankcase of the first tenere/xt models (43L, 43F).
this crankcase is 10 mm smaller then the one used in the teneres starting from 86 (1VJ, 3AJ, e-start!).
therefore also the width of the frame is smaller in this area. which might lead to trouble when you try to fit a centerstand from xt600 to teneres (i have never tried).

klaus

add:
starting from 1990 (XT600E, 3TB) the frame size in the area where you mount the center stand is the same than in the teneres 1VJ, 3AJ.

So that means a centre stand for a 3TB XT600E should fit on a 3AJ Ténéré? Useful, thanks for the correction & info.

how do you find out which model youve got?

The model of your machine is given by the three letter code just before the frame and engine numbers.

Mine shows *3AJ*003nnn* stamped into the frame at the top so it's a 3AJ, frame number 003nnn.

Hi Klaus,

I'm not sure if you are right about the 3AJ having a different frame (wider engine) then a 2KF. Becuase I wanted a kickstarter for a trip in Africa, I build the 2KF engine in my 3AJ. It fits with no problem.....

hi peter,
the frame dimensions are definitly different.
but you are right,
of course the 2KF engine fits in a 3AJ frame.
the dimensions/fixing points engine/frame are the same
BUT
the transmission axle of the old xt modells (34L, 43F, 55W, 2KF/2NF) is shorter than the ones in the new models (1VJ, 3AJ, 3TB/3UW).
which leads to a different position of the sprocket and a smaller frame and different swingarms. the difference (10 mm) is only on the left side of the frame / of the swingarm.
because of this it is principally possible to mount any xt600 engine in any xt600 frame.
so if you mount a new engine in an old frame (or vice versa)you have to do something about the chain alignment (front and rear sprocket are not inline, 10 mm difference).
in your case there are two possibilities:
1) use 2KF-swingarm and -wheel and place a 10 mm thick spacer between swingarm and frame
2) use 3AJ-swingarm and -wheel, but with the sprocket carrier (is this the correct english word?) from 2KF.
(or buy a new chain set every 10000 kms ;-)

klaus

Dear Hed,

I have a 1983 Tenere (34L model). I have fitted a Rikycross centrestand to it. It is off the later models. The part number is 520B and is supposed to fit '85-'89 models but this really should be '86-'90 as it does not fit the '85 (ie '83-'85)models without modification.

As Klaus points out, the later models (1VJ and 3AJ) are wider across the frame than the 34L where the centrestand is mounted.

However only minor modifications were required to the bash(skid)plate under the motor and spacers (10mm LHS and 5mm RHS)between the centrestand mounting sideplates and the footpeg mounting holes with longer bolts to suit. All up 1-2hours to fit.

Wunderlich also have a centrestand listed in their catalogue but I don't know much about it.

Some later/current information that may help others. I have been trying to get a centre stand for my 3AJ and following the usual routes. I have 'phoned both Riky Cross and Wunderlich - Riky Cross no longer sell them and they are unlikely to order another batch from their supplier (would not tell me who). Wunderlich have stopped doing them as "there were disappointments with the quality".

I found the following manufacturer (after following up on Ebay auctions) - http://www.jfmotorsport.de/navigator...hp3?modell=203 and have now purchased one. The final product is different and more sturdier than shown (it has a bar across underneath between the foot-peg mounts. JFMotorsport would not mail outside Germany, so Riderhaus acted as the retailer for me ( http://www.riderhaus.com/ ).

I must say it was worth the wait and cost - great for maintenance, and the first time I have been able to do anything with the front wheel & forks!

Geoff
