Luggage and exhaust

Hi
Just looking at my XT 600 3AJ
I have a rack and some home made alloy boxes but the bike is very wide with boxes attached.
If the exhaust silincer (laser) was moved so it was directly over the rear wheel and came out where rear light and no plate are mounted. I could remove both side panels also think I could cut the seat down and have alot more space for luggage.
What do you guys think

It will eat your tyre. You don't even need to put luggage on the bike or that.

I agree with Fred - it will contact your back tyre.

Check rear suspension travel in your manual (295mm I think?) then get a ruler and measure this distance from the top of the tyre. The plastic mudguard directly above the tyre has a dish in it which is wheel-shaped (have a look and you'll see what I mean). There's a reason for this - it's hard to believe just looking at the bike, but the tyre can travel all the way up there.

There's load of info in max practical width for bikes (in germany by law it's 1 metre). If you're less than 90cm wide then it's fine.

Might it be possible to lower your exhaust and mount the box above it? I've seen pix of Africa Twins with this done. It looks better than it sounds!
