lithium grease and tapered shafts..
 

I,m about to put my engine back together and it calls for me to use lithium grease on the woodruff key,s...can I get away with just a smear of engine oil or is it so important that I use the lithium?....

The grease is to hold the key in place while you reassemble. Engine oil won't do that.Lithium is recommended because it won't contaminate the engine oil when you put it in later.
