LED Turn signals aka blinkers EU Legal ?
Hi all.. I got a question...
Does anyone know if these turn signals are EU legal? 2X 14 LED Short Stalk Motorbike Turn Signals Indicators:eBay Motors (item 310151661436 end time Jul-27-09 01:07:33 PDT) If not, what are the minimum specs for them as for size and shape? There are some longer stalk blinkers like these on ebay but my problem is knowing if they are legal here in Europe... Vando :confused1: |
Most flasher units depend on the current drawn by the bulbs to set the flash rate....You may need to change your flasher unit if you use LED's

Hi!
Yeah, I know that. I already got another blinker relay for my 2002 Yammy DT125R that should work.. But still. Does anyone know if they actually are legal here in the EU? I want to keep the bike legal so it can pass the "MOT"... Vando |
My XT is an US import and has those "Rounder" blinkers ( not the bulky square ones)
Does anyone still have the stock blinkers on their XT600E..if ya could tell me the dimensions I'd be grateful. Vando :innocent: |
For any piece of lighting equipment on a motorbike (headlights, blinkers, taillights, etc.) there needs to be a so called E-Sign.
It's basically an E in a circle followed by some numbers. If there's no such sign, it's not road legal. Yes, it's as simple and inconvenient as that. If you're just passing through on foreign plates, I would not worry to much about that, since mos cops won't bother checking your bike for illegal blinkers. Exhausts are a different story, though. If you're actually gonna be here for a while I'd suggest hitting one of the local bike shops (here in Germany there's three bigger chains of them: Polo, Louis and Hein Gericke). See ya buebo |
The indicators are legal as long as they are spaced more than 14 inches apart. A mate of mine has these units fitted, I don't think they're very clear but the bike has an MOT, so they must be OK.

So much for same standards everywhere, but then again I think Germany is the only country in the EU where you actually have to have the same model of tyre on rear and front wheel... :innocent: See ya... buebo |
The MOT should be fine so long as the spacing, colour, brightness and flash rate are correct. If one of these were wrong and the technician hadn't got his leg over for a while, you might get some comment about the E-mark, but most don't want the hassle and one failure is enough without having you dig out the originals just for test day.
One question: Why? You won't save any electrical power unless you change the whole flasher unit. Looking for long lasting bulbs? Just the look of them? The TUV regs would be the quickest way to reduce traffic levels in the UK. I'd guess the day after the regs came in 90% or bikes and 75% of other vehicles would be off the road. There again, France doesn't even have the MOT on bikes and across the three countries deaths and injuries due to mechanical defects are about the same. You have to wonder what your £ and € go to achieve. Andy |
uk lighting regs actually incorporate non type approved lights the loophole is if its fit for purpose, Such that the light is plainly visible from a reasonable distance at angles of 80° outwards and 20° inwards and is the right colour illumination :rolleyes2:
there are loads of loopholes you just need to know where to look :thumbup1: |

Mine are working good but they are OLD and full of deep scratches and scuffs..one of them is even broken on the middle of the "glass" and is glued with composite glue (Araldite) and small blue insulation tape lol
I want to upgrade them as these will look better with the new (2003 XT600E blue bodywork on my 1990 XT600E ) :D BlackDogZulu: The measures I need are the length of the whole blinker and the length of the "glass" part of both front and back blinkers... Here in Portugal we call the "MOT" or "TUV" as "Inspecção Periódica" or something like that and they are quite restrictive as for modifications... In the island I was born (where I got the XT) we don't have highways as we are a 98 square kilometers piece of land lol Vando :innocent: |

Distance from mounting plate to furthest edge of indicator lens: Front 140mm Rear 145mm. This is the standard setup on a 1994 MY XT600E, UK spec. Hope that's what you need. Shout if it isn't. |
That is exactly what I need!
Thanks Richard! I bought 2pairs of the long stalk ones because the short ones are too short for 30USD (14 are only for shipping! 9.5cm vs the 6.5cm of the short stalk ones.. Last week I saw ONE single blinker just like this one for sale in a motorcycle dealer for 25€ damnnn lol I don't want them just for looks. I want them for security too, I want to be seen on the road! If they don't look too good I can always cut them down a bit  Thank you all for the help! Vando :D |
Glad to help, Vando. It got me out of the office for ten minutes, anyway. I'd rather be fiddling with a bike than working any day :)

Now that's cleared, let's see pictures of that paintjob :)
