Kick-start noise and stalling when hot

My brother just gave me a 1988 XT600 and there are 2 problems with it. Can't start it right now (sat for over 1 year)but will follow advice in other threads.
Issues are that once kick-started and running, there is a noise that sounds like something is not disengaging from the start mechanism. Secondly, when hot, the bike will just stall out and can only start again holding throttle open and hard kicking. Thanks for your help.

FIRST - do a proper full service.

Remove and thoroughly clean carb and set to factory specs.

Replace spark plug. REPLACE gas, make sure filters taps etc are clean and clear.

Set valve clearances.

Since there is a problem with it, do a compression test.

Change the oil.

THEN try to start it, and we can go from there with a good baseline and a hope of solving the problem - IF there still is one, and with luck there won't be!

The "something is not disengaging from the start mechanism" noise I'll leave to XT experts - and further investigation once running again.

Good luck, hope that helps.

Hello Grant:
Thanks for the advice. I'll follow and once running will deal with the kickstarter if the issue continues.
