IVJ Starter Sprag clutch bearing repair / replacement
I am seeking a way to economically repair or replace the slipping sprag starter clutch bearing on my XT600 IVJ. The 'S' shaped teeth seem to have some signs of wear on the inner surface.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to repair the bearing ( perhaps by turning round the teeth ) or how to obtain a replacement part, as the yamaha spare is now discontinued. If anyone has an IVJ bearing they could sell or swap ( I have a spare 3tb starter clutch ) please message me |
One option is to try an automatic transmission parts supplier, as some automatic transmissions also used the same one-way/sprag clutch.

Hi
The rollers on the starter clutch are made from hardened steel and very rarely do they wear bad enouugh that they can not be used, do you have any pic's you can show us. Can you tell me whats wrong with the starter, do you just want to change it because it looks worn or is there a problem. Skip |
The Starter clutch on my XT has been giving trouble for as long as i have owned it, around 10 years. it used to be functional but sometimes would slip. it would generally be ok once the bike was first started of a morning. It would sometimes jam, turning over the electric starter mech when you tried to kick start it, making the bike unstartable. I since removed the starter connecting gears throughthe the side casing, making it kickstart only, after the starter clutch gradually deteriorated to unusable state.
Here are some images of the removed 'NW' bearing. notice how wear 'flats' have formed on the surfaces inner and outer. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/...e949f76a_m.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1137/...8dc47259_m.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1387/...9b454705_m.jpg |
Wow.. damn...
One thing is for sure... you either have another problem that is causing that or that sprag hasn't perfect to start from. What I can think of is: 1- You either ran the bike without enough oil in it 2- Engine servicing? did you forget to "bleed" the oil and oil pump? 3- Oil pump gone bad 4- Bad oil... what have you been using? Synthetic? 5- Have you mixed different engine oils? different weights or even same weight but from DIfferent brands?! this is very important and is neglected alot of times! As for #6 I'd check your e-starter.. it might be getting something stuck in it and is when stuck in while you are ridding.......... You can always find a "new-to-you" used engine and go from there... BTW, can't you backorder one of those sprags from Yamaha?? It will take you quite sometime for it to arrive and you will probably have to pay the shipping.. tho... Vando beer |

Hi Vando, the engine is 50,000 + miles. ( the odo jammed as it went to roll over 50,000 & has been stuck there since.. ) in the last 10 years i've had it its had fairly regular oil / filter changes, i use multigrade mineral ( i find it the cheapest :) ) & out of interest i've had no trouble with the gearbox ( touch wood ) but, as i say, the starter clutch problem has been evident since before i had it. Since originally posting this I have located a secondhand spare bearing. I tried to get hold of a yamaha spare sprag bearing but it has been * discontinued * :funmeterno: as a spare part according to yam main dealer |
Hi this is the new part number for the starter on the XT600s it replaces all other numbers and its still sold by Yamaha RACE ONE-WAY BRG 3TB-15594-00-00, for secound hand parts it worth getting in touch with Dave Lamberth thought HU he's a font of knowledge when it comes to XT600s and he is not expencive. Hi, ive double checked and the part number i gave you is the one that now covers the old part number (1vj-15590-00) but i was also told that this part number can also be used, just to add to the confusion, have you had any luck finding a used part yet. It may be worth putting an advert on the German website XT600.de, its a good website and English can be used, loads of usefull info. Skip

if you take a look at my thread on this board http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/yamaha-tech/xt600-rotor-removal-starter-clutch-53329
and take a look at the pictures of the two kinds of starter clutch and ring gear you will see that the 3tb bearing etc is totally different from the IVJ, and none of it is interchangable. there are, therefore, two different kinds of sprag bearing, ( illustrated ) one for the IVJ, 3AJ etc, and one for the 3tb . I have obtained a secondhand sprag bearing, it looks in much better nick than the old un |
Glad you got another sprag bearing, there seems to be a real mix up with Yamaha part numbers. Skip

to update, i have reassembled using a secondhand replacement sprag bearing
and my 1VJ electric start is back in working order. I did find someone selling a sprag bearing for the xt600 on ebay, it was different again to either of the two types pictured in this thread http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...r-clutch-53329 So it looks like there are potentially three different types of sprag bearing for the xt6. ensure you correctly identify before purchasing replacement |
