IVJ 600z starter clutch

Starter clutch on my 89 IVJ tenere has been dodgy for some while now -
sometimes it won't disengage making it impossible to kickstart as it
drives the starter mechanism around with it in this state.
it is usually possible however to disengage it by repeated use of the starter button.

I've looked at the microfische for this engine, but it isn't clear if the starter clutch is contained within the RH engine casing, or if it means splitting the crankcases to repair.
Be great to hear from anyone who has a cost effective fix for this problem, or a workaround.

Hi, starter mech is in LHS. it consists of the starter driving a spargue (sp) clutch mounted on the back of the altenator/flywheel via a couple of gears. To remove it you will need to drain engine oil and remove LHS cover (also the small cover over the starter pinion). You will need replacement gaskets (1 for the main cover, 1 for the small cover and 2 o-rings for the oil gallery that runs through the cover). You will then need a puller to remove the fly wheel, this can be tough to get off but tension up the puller then heat the fly wheel hub with a hot air gun and give it a good tap whith a copper faced hammer it should come off ok. the clutch itself is like a big roller bearing that has flats on the rollers, possibly a good clean could fix it.
Hope this helps,
Dave
