Hot oil
 

Hello - I've just bought an XXT600E. Enjoying it-much more fun than my Honda VFR 750 (now sold). I'm new to these bikes so pardon a simple question. When I got home last night after 12mile run, keeping around the 4000 rpm running in limit(I'm on 175 miles), I could here gurgling noises from oil area of frame. It sounded like the oil was perhaps boiling - is this part of running in a tight (hot ) engine? Normal sound of oil draining into engine? Any advice appreciated - regards.

Never heard of that boxer but mine ran really hot when it was new,had me worried for a bit but after the first 200 miles or so it ran a lot cooler,handbook says 1000 miles to run in,I`d say more like 3000 because they seem to run better and better up to that mileage,read in a magazine once that the higher the mileage on an XT the sweeter the motor.

Thanks for that. Just done same run today - cooler day - no strange sounds. It looks like a gentle run in for a little longer than manual says might be a good policy. I didn't buy it to get everywhere as quickly as possible (more the opposite actually) so that's no problem.Cheers.

You probably know this but check the oil level after the bike has been for a short run. Do not try to check the level using the method in the manual. Running the engine for the suggested 10 secs as in the manual results in no detectable oil level - this gave me a bit of a shock when I first got my XT.
