Home made air filter

I stipped my old filter and have fitted some fine netting/mesh to one face and re fitted the spark arrestor metal mesh in the hope my motor might be able to breath a bit more.

Am I wasting my time? It has a Laser pro pipe at the mo and seems to run ok.

Cheers

Airfilters are supposed to be wet with airfilter oil very slightly so that dirt dust and sand is caught in it preventing it entering the engine.

I ran my Africa with a cut down airfilter , it ran fine, but an acquaintance ran his ZX6R with a mesh filter (no paper and no oil) he got sand and dust in his engine , glass formed in one of his cylinders , some dust cut a tiny scratch into the side wall of another cylinder which then burnt out and made it burn an insane amount of oil.

So bad things can happen , I'd probably jet it to be a touch richer TBH in that with new end can and no filter it will run a bit leaner, too lean it burns a hole in your pistons , too rich just wastes petrol and at idle washes the oil off the bores (and shortens engine life necessitating more regular rebuilds).
