high spec oil
 

hi there my 85 43f has about 23000 miles ive done 6000 of these, . ive used castral gp 10/40 oil all the time ive had it. ive just rang dave lamberth and asked him what oil he uses. he uses and recomends millers crv 20/50 semi synthetic oil. its for car engines with a combind engine/ gearbox, minis etc. it is high spec racing stuff , with good load and shear strenth . its 40 pounds for 5 litres , so not cheap , but the guy swears by it . so have any of you guys used it and what do you think of it .?c? zigzag

Don't forget that David is an engineer and fastidious with it. Don't get me wrong, he is the ONLY man I ever want to work on my XT (other than me) but ask yourself what his XT's get used for, he organises racing and tourist trips to north Africa, a tough, hot environment and as he is in business he needs to keep his service intervals as long as possible.

I have a 2003 XT660E with >20k [mostly road] miles. I use Mobil S (semi-synth 10-40) that costs me ~£15 a gallon. I fully expect another 20k (and more) trouble free miles. The most important thing about oil is regular changes, but I find the recommended 6k mile interval perfectly acceptable for my usage with this oil.

I have an oil temperature dip stick. Normal running is at 90C, never seen it hotter than 120C after a 70 mph motorway run from Edinburgh to Coventry.

Yes, millers crv is great oil, and Dave really knows his stuff but, as ever, it's a matter of horses for courses.

PS: I know Dave lurks round here sometimes so perhaps we will see a post telling me just how wrong I can be :laugh:

Maybe overkill, but this thread is about the BEST OIL. Ray Debben runs one of the fastest NORMALLY ASPIRATED air cooled bikes in the country, running sub 8 sec quarter miles. His bike beats turbo 'Busa's on a regular basis!

Millers is good stuff but if you want the best then go above semi synthetic and use a synthetic.
