just picked up an 86 xt600. all i know about her is she has sat for like 2 years, oil seems to be fine. but i want to change it before i ride it around too much. also i have no air filters. ive only road it on the street so far and it seems to act normal... but now im having electrical problems. the previous owner said im gonna need a battery cause barely anything works. just a really dim headlight works. no blinkers brake light ect, plus the headlight gets worse as rpm's climb higher.. any imput will help me greatly. this is my first bike i have bought with my own money and i want to get the most out of its full potental.

The XT have a regulator / rectifier that needs to 'see' a battery to produce e-power for lights etc (Needs to see 12 V). So, when your battery is dead, which it probably is, the symptoms you describe are as expected.

Change the battery and you will be OK.
