hello everyone, could anybody recommend what sealant to use to put my 1vj gearbox back together i have been told by my yamaha dealer(with the usual unhelpful attitude) to use a good sealant because it doesnt have a gasket but i want to use a good one any suggestions ?

Goo

That must be black, non-hardening fluid gasket. Loctite, Wurtz or other brands. Apply thinly. Also to be used for the head / head cover sealing. Especially the last, let dry for at least 24 hours after assemby, otherwise you'll have to do it agian in a couple of weeks.

Auke

I would use the Permatex Ultra Black...its a high temp sealant and has great oil resistance...and should be 5 Sterling max per tube.

Pay attention to what Auke noted about cure time and what the instructions say about it...ALSO, make sure you clean the mating surfaces well and are dry before you apply this.

Store in the fridge for other uses as well...I've used it successfully for water/oil pumps, sumps, etc...

P.S. Yamaha doesn't make their own stuff, somebody else does for them. Probably Permatex...

You need the red or orange sealer - and apply it thickly for that ''I do my own repairs'' look.

For professional use,in the Honda shop we used Threebond Liquid grey sealer. This is what Honda recommended and would be close to Yamabond too.
