fitting smaller front wheel

What is the reason why I should not fit a 17 in front wheel with the fattest tyre I can find to my bike?
I have used a TW200 for a few years for forest track use and find it works well.
Although I would like the extra oomph of e.g. an XT600 why is front tyre soo thin and gets me into ruts I don't want....and smaller wheels =more handy turning???

I would be very interested to see the result... if you are convinced enough to try the transformation .. really it's difficult to think what will happen with such a change in bike geometry ...Yamaha TW was designed for such wheels ..an a XT /Teneré you will have also to change the fork or fork plates ...

hi paul, i looked into getting smaller road wheels for my XT600E to turn it into a `supermotard` style bike.this would involve a wider back wheel and 17" front,so sticky road tyres can be fitted.i didnt in the end because;1. you can now get good road tyres for 21" wheels(Avon, Metzeler etc).2. offroad bikes have large diameter/skinny wheels for good reasons.small wheels dig into holes and ruts better than big wheels, and skinny wheels steer in thick mud better than wide ones, which get clogged with mud and start skidding everywhere.
