Fitting Clark 84-89 tank onto '92 XT600

Here's another swap question for you guys. I have a '92 XT600 and I'd like some added fuel capacity over the stock tank. I have an opportunity to pick up a Clarke one for cheap, but I know that it's not listed to fit the '92. Does anyone know what exactly makes it not fit the later bike? Pictures of the frames look similar. I wouldn't mind doing some cutting/fabricating/welding to make the Clarke fit onto my '92, but not if it will involve re-engineering the whole bike. I don't have the tank available to look at, so can someone shed some light on what makes the '84-89 tank incompatible with the 90-up bikes? Thanks.

Well, I tried a '89 XT600 tank on for size today. The front of the tank hits the oil line next to the fill cap, and the rear of the tank is too narrow to clear the frame where it branches off from the main spine. A metal tank might be made to fit with some hammering, but I don't think there's any realistic way to adapt the plastic Clarke tank to the '90+ XTs. I might actually try hammering an earlier metal tank to fit if I can get a cheap one. I think the '92 tank is quite ugly.
