Extra Vin number location

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and I have a XT or TT 600. I bought it for $ 225.00 and I'm slowly getting it going again I hope. The tag on the neck of the frame has been partially scraped off and there's no way to tell the vin number. I wonder if the vin number is stamped onto the frame or some other location and thought I would ask all ya'll.
Thanks
John
Forgive me it's an 86 model

Seems I have stumped everyone or maybe no one cares.

answer is no. Generally the engine number and frame number matched though so that may help

No engine number is not same as frame number, so just enjoy your bike! Do you have paper on this?

Ok, have a spare engine 4pt and it says 3TBxxxx so its not matching the frame for the 4PT it came from and its only a few digits on it.

OK yes there are a few anomalies!.....you must have an early 4PT that still used the 3TB engine. Later 4PT had genuine 4PT engine which used some XTZ660 bits including clutch actuator and upgraded 5th gear set. Out of interest, although your prefix is different are the numbers the same or even close?

Ive had early XT600's/ 34L's and 3TB's and all are same number as frame

Ok i see, it have the clutch cable on the other side. Did they really have old 3tb engine in a 4pt silver case? Only thing i know is that frame was 4pt and not 3tb, there is 5 numbers on engine. My other bike has not same engine and frame number and its original. Is there any fact in that Yamaha stopped making matching numbers after 1997? Would make sence due to years of my bikes.

I think it required by laws to have the motor # match the frame whether auto/truck, or bike . Maybe some carry-over parts are ok but the main #'s should be matching . Some countries it's hard to register if things don't math up isn't it ? Like UK ?

If i understand this correct its like a match on the old bikes and not on bikes from 96 up, but its possible to check dealer if engine match VIN. I read others have had bike from new and no match engine and VIN.

I dont know if the old ones either had match after reading this: After 25 years of owning kz's I have never seen a "matching number" KZ. I have heard of a few that were close but never matching. The registration was always done with the frame number. I'm not even sure why they even put a number on the motor. Maybe it was a Govt. thing.

I will check and report back the motor numbers and also see if they match any of the numbers left on the vin tag/sticker.
I got the carbs back on the bike and poured gas down a tube and into the carb and it fired up and ran for a few seconds, maybe like 20 seconds. No knocks or crazy smoke or anything weird.

Been in contact with Yamaha and they confirm that it has been a change with engine number dont match frame, change must have been before 2000. My 2000 was reg with the number that i have when bike sold new in Norway and its not a matching number, its matching start but different last 3 digits.

Just means its had an engine swap, possibly the original blew beyond economical repair so they put a used one as its replacement.
