Electrics don't work witout engine running

When I turn the key on my 1985 XT600(no electric start)none of the electrics work, light, turn lights or any of the 'dash' lights (neutral etc). After kickstarting the bike the engine runs perfectly and all the electrics come back to life. They are possibly slightly dimmer than normal.

Is it a dead battery or faulty alternator or a loose connection?

Sounds like a dead battery to me. Faulty alternator would give no charge and poor connection would probably have electrics flickering.

Have you checked your fuse, could also be a tarnished fuse holder or a disconnected wire between battery and loom, with the alternator providing power when te engine is running and the battery playing no part.
Your XT probobally doesnt need a battery conected for the ignition to work

Thanks for the input guys

I have checked the battery and it is'nt carrying a full charge. I am having it charged overnight, hopefully it will solve the problem. I will check the fuses and connections anyway.
