Decisions,decisions...

I picked this up 3aj off ebay last week.Got the ferry from Dublin to Liverpool and was picked up by the seller at the port, thanks Martin. She's currently awaiting a new stator as she wasn't charging. Had to make it back to the ferry before dark as I didn't know how long she would run on the battery. A good test for my newly aquired steed,up the M53 chasing the daylight. Made it back to Tipperary and enjoyed every cold moment of it.
I currently have a '91 registered 3aj with 92,000kms,that I'm very attached to,many memories,and a '02 KTM640 Adv with 50,000 kilometers on it,that I like just for it's stance and pedigree,but wouldn't consider for a serious trip without a full engine overhaul just for peace of mind....and a new seat.
Problem is,something has to go.
I like all the bikes, what should I do?
Also today I eventually became a member, but wasn't logged on.
When and how do I get recognised as a member?
On the subject of the stator, is it possible to get an uprated item?

Hi you can get a pattern stator or get your one rewound.
If you go for a pattern stator you will need to use your old ignition pickup.
I would get the oringal stator rewound either by west coast windings or electrex. Make sure you dont misplace the pick up as this is only avaible from Yamaha with a complete stator for about £400.
When you undo the screws holding the stator to the casing use a good impact driver with a good quality bit. I take mine to the local garage and get them to undo the screws with a snapon impact driver, the screws will be very tight if they round off they will need to be drilled.
Good luck

KTM for sale

I've thought long and hard about it with the result that the KTM is now for sale.
For Sale : '02 KTM 640 Adv - Biker.ie : Irish Biker's Discussion Forum

I decided that the Tenere will always be the bike for me to do my Australian trip on eventually.
To have two really clean 3aj's from which to prepare one,is perfect. While I upgrade individual parts,I can still use the extra stock components to keep me on the road here. When I do hit the road,I'll have spare everything, to be shipped to me if I need them.
The KTM is really amazing, but the service intervals with fully synth oil(no question about fully synth,it has to be) and 2 filters and fiddly valve clearances on the side of the road, can't be practical.
I don't plan on crossing the Sahara and I feel with the correct suspension mods, the Tenere will be more than capable,as proven by lots of people on here.
There will always be 640 Adv's available, but I think good Tenere's are getting thin on the ground.
The XT is king.

On a slight deviation of the theme - My TTR600RE is a real pain when it comes to oil & filter changes. :nono:

You need to remove the lower oil tank pipe (behind the gear lever) to drain the tank and so you can remove the oil drain bolt! The oil hose has 2 x 6mm allen bolts holding it in place and the forward most one is a bit fiddly to access! The pipe union also has a small "O" ring which should be replaced!!!!

Then its round the other side to replace the filter (fairly easy) but ideal there 2 x "O" rings (big & small) to replace too! Did I mention the bleed screw?

Not the simplest of procedures I've ever come across

Even checking the level is a muck about :eek3:

Same,same

The Tenere is the same, easy once you get used to it.
The KTM is easy too except you have 2 filters,a gauze to clean on the drain plug and you have to burp the frame(oil tank).
Everything just seems a bit less delicate on the XT.
The KTM is a pleasure to work on in my garage where it's clean and bright.
Wouldn't fancy working on it anywhere else.
I wouldn't care where I worked on the XT.
Still waiting on some interest in my KTM, prob a bit rich with my asking price.
Oh well,it's a lot easier to drop the price than it is to raise it.
I hope I can sell it so I can hold onto my "new" Ten.
