Choke problem/question - TT600R 2001 kickstart
 

Hi all! First time here.

Couldn't find related problem which is strange as I've heard lots of TTRs have that.

So, starting it cold with choke ON (pulled out) with no problems. Waiting a couple of minutes until RPMs get lower and then trying to slowly close the choke. Then no matter how fast or slow I do this, more I push it, RPM are dropping until engine stalls. Not so long ago I got the carburettor completely checked, adjusted and cleaned. Sometime when I push the choke in, RPM are rising but then if I keep doing it they drop and eventually engine stalls.

Of course if I use the throttle to keep RPM up it's possible to drop the choke without killing the engine. Only like one time I got it working properly using the choke only. I have XT600 standing next to my TTR and it works like a charm there.

I've asked on the different group and others said they have the same thing with theirs TTR. I just can't believe it's their nature..

Can you guys advise? Is it easily adjustable? Can I handle it myself?

When you say the carb has been cleaned? Has it really been cleaned. Your symptoms sound very much like a blocked/ partially blocked pilot jet. If carb was left to sit for long time with fuel in it and not run then highly possible pilot jet has layer of varnish in it. I have cleaned these out using strands of copper wire previously, otherwise renew it.

Are your rubber intake manifolds in good condition and sealing 100%. The rubber tends to delaminate from the alloy on old manifolds. Any vacuum leak here will cause idle troubles also. Get the bike running with the starter enricher out and spray aerostart around the manifolds. RPM's will rise if it is able to suck in the aerostart from anywhere.

I bought the bike in June, left it for maintenance in July. I saw carb on the table cleaned in the mechanic's garage so I guess it has been cleaned correctly. Overall, only the connectors have been replaced with brand new.

Had those symptoms since I picked up the bike from mechanic. How often should the carb be cleaned?

I'll have to check on the rubbers, thanks for the advice!

Maybe the idle mixture screw is set too lean, or the idle speed is set too slow?
