Changing oil filter

I bought a couple of oil filters (one for spare) and went to change the oil and oil filter on my XT600E 2003 but the one that came out is different to the champion X302 I have that is from wemoto.

Yamaha XT 600 E 99-03 Replacement Motorcycle Parts at Wemoto

I will try to attach a picture showing the old one that came out, the new champion and the new champion I modified to fit.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar situation.

Personally, I always use Yamaha ones, only about six quid, then you know they will fit! They are stocked by virtually every Yam dealer as they fit a variety of models XT, TT, Virago etc. I have heard that some "pattern" filters do not have an effective non return valve.
In your pic (for a TTR/RE anyway) it should be as the middle one, the protruding "tube" seats in to the recess in the engine side of the housing, the flatter side seats against the cover with the bleed screw on it.

Thanks for the reply.

It's strange, in the owners manual specifications it says what oil, air filter and spark plug are needed but not the number or type of oil filter to use.
So I assumed the one from wemoto would be correct.

In the workshop manual the picture is of the Champion oil filter with the protruding tube but the tube does not fit inside the recess, no way will it fit.
I tried pushing it in by tightening the screws on the cover.

I do not want to risk damaging my engine by using the modified filter (I cut the protruding tube off).
Could I damage the engine by fitting the modified filter? If so I will refit the old one which has done 5000 miles.

Do you have a part number for the Yamaha XT oil filter? Maybe I can order it from Fowlers in Bristol. They delivered another part the next day so are relaible.

Editing to add that I found the part number 4X7-13440-01 but the picture of it in the parts manual is the one with the protruding tube. So no point ordering it.
My bike was a European import so maybe that is why I am having problems getting the correct oil filter?

i buy the champion ones from halfords along with the oil and they fit fine for less than a fiver, why order them and have them delivered?

i'd be amazed if your '03 has a different filter to my '97 or even someones '82 tenere! the air cooled 600 has been around forever

Have just been in garage to retrieve one from my "stock" (4 TTR's to care for). Part no. 4X7-13440-90. The only thing I can think of is that you perhaps have part of the old filter stuck in the way, from your picture it looks like the old one has come apart. As has already been said, the XT's are basically all the same, filter included.( and FZR, SRV, SRX, TDM, SR, TDR.........).

Davsato, I needed a few bits, air filter, sump plug, spark plug, rear brake pads so I also ordered the champion oil filter too from wemoto. They all arrived the next day.

I did get the oil from Halfords, had no idea they catered for motorcycles as I am new to them having had a car for the last 25 years. I avoid them wherever possible and use the Ford spares shop.

Leigh, thanks for going to the garage to check the part number.
Googling it brings up a picture of a silmiar looking filter as the champion with the protruding tube. So that wont fit my bike.
I did have a good look and are is no old filter parts left in the bike.
So either the oil filter was bought like that or they modified it to fit.

Anyway thanks for your help, I will sort it out by emailing a couple of spares companies and see if they have come across this problem before.
