Carbon fiber clutch plates?

I'm replacing my clutch plates and springs since it seems a little slippy and are totally unknown. Only 13k miles though. Anyways, I see a set of carbon fiber clutch plates that are only a few dollars more than the cork based plates for the US XT600 (mines an '89).

Anyone know of the pros/cons of these? I cant seem to find much info online...

Carbon fibre is tough, hard and may well wear the rest of the clutch out quicker. It may also shed tough and hard particles in to your oil.

I would stick with tried and tested technology - especially when the rest of the clutch is built for fibre plates. Stronger springs may well help - my 1200 Bandit clutch was done in 11,000 miles from new and there was plenty left on the plates. Weak springs was the problem there.

That said I haven't heard of an XT600 clutch going, ever. Are you using full synthetic engine oil? That may make your clutch feel (and be) slippy.

No I'm using dino Castrol 10-40 oil. Admittedly it did start feeling that way a day or so after I did an oil/oil filter change..

Non bike specific automotive oils can make the clutch feel more "slippy" since they aren't formulated for wet clutches. If that is what you are using, I don't think that would cause any harm unless the slippage is excessive.

It is regular 4T motorcycle oil. I ended up buying the fiber clutch plates (why not) and new springs. I'll report back on how it goes and feels after I get them and installed next week.
