Carbon deposit in primary carb

I've stripped my carb and found what looks like carbon lining all the surfaces in the chamber in which the needle moves up and down (not hard to guess tha I'm new at this). I'm guessing it has something to do with air getting in through a rip I found in the rubber joint that connects it to the cylinder head. Does that sound right or could it be a sympton of something more? Any tips on whether I should clean it off and what substance I should use?

if the inlet rubber is split then you could in theory get blowback.

have you tried cleaning it with carb cleaner and a toothbrush?...brake cleaner will work too.

Yeah I was getting a big bang and puff of blue smoke from the carb when I started it. I was worried I might have to resort to the toothbrush and toxic chemicals. I guess I can't just leave the carbon in there and hope it will clean itself once the joint is fixed?
