Piston and crown or piston crown? Either way, just use a not too sharp knife and don't worry about any surface marks. They won't do any harm. Wire brush to finish. I'm assuming the piston is not still in the barrel?

Brillo pads??

I think it's called that... it's a green "sponge" that has soap in it that is used to clean pots and gives them shine at the same time!

Brillo Pads were accually wire wool pads with a pink soap impregnated in them.

A green nylon scouring pad (for pots & pans) is good for the final polish of the piston crown. A bit of copper pipe which has been flattened is good as it doesn't scratch the piston/head so much.

Just make sure the thing you are using has no sharp bits or burrs on it, or it'll gouge it :(
