carb problem

:confused1: Just put a low mile 3aj engine into a 1vj. She seems to be running rich, a bit sooty on the pipe. She surges a bit on a steady throttle. Should I re-jet stock 1vj carbs? Engine is 3aj mk2, oil pipe to gear box, silver cases.
On acceleration she pulls like a train. Could it be the inlet rubbers?
Thanks lads, Neil

Pull the plug and have a look at it's color, my pipe is always sooty but the plug is tan. You can also check that the choke valve is closing and not held open a bit by the cable. Have you checked carb settings and jet sizes to insure they are stock?
bad inlet rubbers will cause a lean mixture.

Thanks Winmac will try choke. She starts with no choke. She has 3aj airbox. Neil

Starting with no choke leans towards the idea that shes a little rich, depending on the temperature & climate of course.

Soot is normal on the pipe, just depends how much.
