carb floats sticking?
sorry i tryed the search? i have a 1990 xt600, today my carb floats started sticking really bad, every time i stop i dump out a lot of gas? i think its my floats? how do i fix this, is it hard? i not that good a rebuilding carbs?
|
My 1990 used to do that, I just shut off the petcock every time I stopped. I rode it for 1000 miles more and eventually it quit.

take your carb apart, clean everything in petrol, look at the o-rings, maybe replace some gaskets if they need it. It is an easy job that should take less than an hour if the bits are to hand. I would say re-use gaskets and replace o-rings, then see if it leaks after the rebuild.
Once done you will know how to do it, which is invaluable (have had to do it in a bivvy bag in high wind and sand - was very glad I had done it in the shed first) |
Agreed with henryuk.
The needle valve might be worn a little, the float pivot pin might be a little tight, the needle riser might be bent, something might be wrong. |
im gong to remove my carbs, i heard there a pita, is there any thing i need to look for ? besides dammaging my in take boots?
|
Bloody acronyms... took me ages to figure out what a pita was. Over here it's a flat greek bread!
Taking carbs off is a doddle, the hardest/fiddliest bit is normally disconnecting the throttle cable. On most bikes it is easiest to take the whole cable off from the twist grip (remember where the cables route up |
Heh, last time I took my carb off, I ended up shredding the intake rubbers on the head-side.
I've heard it's easier to take off the airbox and then take out the carb, but I'm not sure what that entails. |
ya i think im going to try some carb cleaner additive in my gas tank, before i start breaking 18 year old boots, and lines.
