avon tyre splitting
 

Has anyone had problems with the side wall of their tyres cracking and splitting? The tyre is an avon distanzia and its on the rear of my xt. The tyre has been on for just over a year but the first splits started in the first week of fitment. Its had no chemicals whatsoever near it and the manufacturing date is midway through 2014. The bike has passed two mot's now and ive been told its safe but i wondered if anyone here had similar issues and what could cause this. Tyre pressures are fine btw. Ill upload some pictures shortly. I think its got to be some sort of manufacturing fault.Any ideas?

Outside of someone cutting the tire ,there isn't any reason a new'ish tire should ever split .Weathering should take many more years than this especially if using the bike often and not sitting outside most of the time. I'd say they had a bad batch of rubber or poor mixing of the compound .I'd call the place you got it from or even email the mfg themselves with the tire's serial number and date code , maybe a close up picture , never know they may send a new one or a coupon for one.

Some dot knobbies "chunk" meaning the knobs rip off at the base , but not on the sidewall .

As soon as my phone batterys charged up again ill take some more pics. Similar cracks are all around the tyre on both sides.

Thanks jjrider. I emailed the manufacturer months ago for advice but they directed me back to the supplier/fitter. He says its nothing to worry about and its safe, but ive never come across this before and certainly wouldnt expect it on such a young tyre. I will be contacting the manufacturer again.

We dont need more pcitures, this is failure and offc you should get a new tire!! BTW have a 10year old michelin nub tire here and still no crack sides..

My gut feeling is that this has come from a faulty batch. Have you ever come across this before xtrock?

It wouldn't concern me either. It's always worth keeping an eye on but it's no reason to bin a perfectly good tyre.

Never ever, and its stupid of dealer to say its ok..Doesnt matter if its MOT ok or not, its a failure and i dont let it go easy on dealers, claim for a new tire!

A dealer will most likely replace it because it's not worth the hassle arguing. Then one of the staff will use it on their bike until its carcass is showing.

I'm not making an official comment on that tyre.

Of course, if you have any concern then demand a new tyre.. Or buy one.

Its reassuring to get another independent mot tester's opinion on this. Any idea what causes this and is it a common occurence?

It all depends on severity. Any exposed canvas is a no no..

On a mobile phone I can't see that picture clearly. Its probably old stock or maybe its been stored incorrectly. I see tyres in much much worse state on a daily basis. Modern tyres are TOUGH.

But if the cracks are deep then the 'Piece of mind' from new tyres makes it worth while changing them.

I'm sure if you push hard enough you could get a new one.
