Altenator
 

Does anyone know if the alternators an all models are the same / interchangeable.

There is one for sale on ebay at the moment (doesn't specify year but I've asked the vendor)abd I want to know if it will fit my 1985 Tenere 55W. It looks diferent as there are two coils for the CDI unit whereas mine only has one.

This is not the correct one for your 55W. We own both 3AJ and a 55W and indeed the alternators are different.
In general, 34L and 55W are identical. 1VJ and 3AJ also.
Then there are the TCI ignitions, all those XT600's, also different alternators.

Do you happen to know if the pickup coil is the same on both models?

No, pick-up colis are not the same. That is, as for the mounting bracket. Electronically-wise I do not know, but I would not try to modify one as it is a pretty expensive thingy and would be pretty difficult to fit a non-dedicated part in the small space available. Also, the gap between rotor and pickup is critical.

I am going to try and re-attach the wires on the pick-up coil. They have got brittle where they meet the casing of the pick-up coil.
