Altatude problems?

Will be crossing the Andes pretty soon, does a 1990 Xt600Z 3aj have any problems with the thinner air, and how can I adjust (air intake?) what will be the recommended oil for crossing the Andes, used 20W50 for Brasil, i´m gessing on 15W40

thanks

Mark

check your carb: late 3AJ's were equipped with an altitude air corrector. i have described this here:
http://www.xt600.de/xt_werkstatt/+sp...r/vergaser.htm
there is also a picture (Barometerdose, last pic). carbs equipped with this corrector have 2 additional air channels. if your carb doesn't have this, you should change main jets to smaller size because mixture will become too rich in high altitudes.
don't worry about the oil. carefully warm up the engine, that's more important. you are not racing, aren't you?

have fun,
klaus

Mark:

If you have the air corrector valve you don't have to worry about the altitude. We 'just'crossed Ethiopia, max altitude 3000 meters. The 55W without the valve definitely had problems, the 3DS (=3AJ) ran perfectly, consumption reduced to 1 liter : 25 kms!
