94 xtz 660 rear rack 5kg!!??
 

Hey there guys!
I've ordered a 48l top case with adapter plate off ebay which i can send back if I must..Anyways signed my bike papers today getting bike on Thursday and was handed owners manual, now in the manual it stipulates! DO NOT EXCEED MAXIMUM LOAD 5KG!!!! ?HALO? 48l top case! Where will it go, will this fit straight on or do i need some modifications?

The 5kg is a product liability thing. I'm not sure about the law in Germany, but in UK a manufacturer can be held liable for accidents caused by a fault in their product. By limiting the load "officially" to 5kg, it means that if you load it up with 500kg and crash, they can say that it isn't their fault. It's a way of keeping out of trouble, by puting the onus on the user to be sensible.

The rack will probably carry a lot more than 5kg safely, but you have to use your own judgement. If you are carrying 50kg and it breaks, then don't go back to the makers, that's all.

For example, Land Rover roof racks, which can easily carry 500kg (I have done it) are limited - according to Land Rover - to 50kg.

Just use your common sense. A 48l topcase shouldn't worry the rack, unless you fill it with lead.

He,y ok so maybe if someone have a tip to where i could find a aftermarket/ stronger rearrack for my xt some one not using their's ect. as i'm planning lots of traveling next month, up to tonder - denmark and down to Florence italy and back to frankfurt, last thing i want to worry about is my rear rack falling on the floor!!

I've got the proper Yamaha rack on mine (part no. 4PT-W0736-00-00) and it is very sturdy and well-made, although it needed a bit of modification to go on my 3TB. Also, SW-Motech do one that looks very good.

Alternatively, if you are worried about load capacity, could you just make up a couple of bracing pieces to go between the rear of the rack and the frame? Anything to spread the load about is good.

i think its a liability thing for sue-happy americans. the one on my varadero is plastic and says 10kg max load, but ive happily carried cases of beer in my topbox.

Ya geting married in tonder the week of 10 sept, gotta stay in the town or close to anyways 3 days before the 10th so will see what's in the area to kill time..

I have a 91 version of your bike. I have a Givi Maxia box and carry my laptop around in it all the time and have also carried large quantities of beer with no adverse effect whatsoever. I reckon it is a very strong rack actually.

yip so it was all good!! did 3000km with me my wife two side cases nd the top box.. NO PROBLEMS. apart from having allot of wind and almost blowing off while crossing bridges, the bike and everything else did just gr8!!
