90's forks and swingarm into an 80's frame?

As the post title, does anyone know if the forks and swingarm from a 3TB model will fit onto a 1vj / 3aj frame?

Hi elv,

The front end i.e. forks shouldn't be a problem providing you also change the triple clamps along with the front wheel and brake assembly. You might have to swap the steering stem from the original 1VJ to the later bottom triple clamp. I don't know about the rear you would have consider the width of the back of the gearbox from one model to another and also the linkage and shock length it might be more trouble than its worth.

What makes you want to make the changes?

Regards Sam.

elv,

As i discovered went i went to change the speedo drive on my 3AJ, the front end from a KLE500 seems to slot right in.

On the bright side the speedo drive part was cheaper.

80's frames dont have the bottom mounting for the 90's suspension linkage for starters also the top mounting for the shock is in a different position :(

but if your a good fabricator that should be no problem i fitted an R6 swingarm into my 97' xt600e :thumbup1:

The reason I was considering the swap is that the '96 bike im currently working on as a winter project was originally a stolen recovered bike. The back end of the frame was badly damaged when it was stolen and and the insurance company removed the frame numbers so the bike cannot be put back on the road.

The previous owner bought the bike back from the insurance company and welded (very badly) the damage up with the intention of using it as a field bike but the loom had been ripped out when it was stolen and had bits of wires hanging out everywhere and he couldnt figure out how to wire it back up so and so ended up selling it as a non runner (to me).

Ive now managed to properly rewire the bike and after an oil and filter change and new battery it seems to be running pretty well but Ive spoken to the dvla and they agree that they would not issue another number for this frame even if the frame was repaired properly as the insurance company classed it as a write off and so the only way to get the bike back on the road again is to source a road worthy frame complete with V5 and swap the frames over but ive been looking since last winter and I cant find a 90's frame anywhere.:(

Unfortunatly I cant weld (determined to learn one day) so any major fabrication work would be out unless i paid someone to do it which would end up costing more than the bike is worth:(
