'89 XT600 tank options

Hey all, just joined the forum and I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I'm looking to get one of the old kick-only XT600s to do up and the first thing I wanna do is replace the tiny stock petrol tank with a larger, plastic one.

The only aftermarket tank I can find is the clarke 15 litre one which seems a bit on the small side. I keep hearing of an acerbis 'desert' tank but I cant find any info on it. If anyone could fill me in I'd appreciate it. What does it look like? What's its capactiy? And how easy are they to locate? As far as I can tell they have been discontinued by acerbis.

Alternatively, how well does the acerbis 23 litre XT600E tank fit an old XT600? I might be able to fabricate brackets etc for it but it's a bit daunting for me.

Thanks guys :)

Do you need more than 15L around London then?

There`s not much choice to be honest, if you really need bigger capacity & are prepared to do the fabrication you could put an early 34L Ténéré tank on there but its a lot of work if its just for aesthetic reasons.

Fred is doing this mod right now on an early TT600.

My 86 kicker only bike does 120 miles at least before it hits reserve. More than enough for where i live.

If you get an '89 XT (that'd be a 2KF model, I have one) it has a 13 litre tank and I get 200km out of it easily. I thought about a Clarke tank from Justgastanks.com but they are 18 litres and I can't be arsed to change the tank to gain 5 litres. If you want more tank capacity on an XT perhaps you should just buy a Tenere?

Hey,

I fitted an acerbis tank designed for an older XT (not sure which one) to my 2003. From memory the only difference was I had to cut down the plastics as the tank shape is slightly different. Given this, you may find that an acerbis tank for the '96 - 2003 models will fit an older bike. Might not look quite right though. I'd definately 'try before you buy'.

The older style acerbis tank for the XT was 20 litres, I think.

Unfortunately the tank turned out to be faulty so I had to buy a new 23l one anyway.

Matt :)
