'89 top end onto '92 XT600E motor
 

I'm thinking about trying to keep the XT600E motor rather than swap an entire earlier motor into my '92. The only part that I'm really lacking for my '92 motor is the cylinder. I can get a good cylinder from an '89 XT600. Will the earlier top end parts mix and match onto the later motor? I think I'd like to use the '92 E-motor bottom end and cam cover, with the '89 cylinder and head. Is this feasible? Thanks.

One thing I could do is help you cross-reference the parts from both engines and see if anything matches...

I've done a bit of doing that. The base gasket and head gasket both interchange between the two motors. I can't tell if the cylinder is the same basic part because it was painted black in '89 and silver in '92. It seems to be the same cylinder, though.
There seems to have been a change in the cylinder partway through the '88 model year. The head gasket bolt pattern is different. The base gasket is the same, so it looks like you could swap the parts onto a later motor, though you'd have to use the earlier head as well. In my case, I'm thinking that the '89 parts will all swap onto the '92 motor, though I could still be wrong.

Well, I got a '89 cylinder and it looks identical to the '92 cylinder. They're both 3AJ00 castings.

I have an 89 xt 600 and an 86 xt 600 (using 86 as a parts bike because of no title) . I just rebuilt the top end of the 89.. I had a spare head that came with the 89 and figured while that head was already off the bike I'd re-do it and just put it on as I did the top end and then redo the original head and set it aside as a stand by ,, well after the cylinder and piston was on , I went to put the redone head on and where the cam chain goes it was missing a bolt hole and also the studs were a different spacing than the the cylinder and the head that came off .

So off to the 86 parts bike , took that head off and the head I was trying to put on was the same as the 86 parts bike. I ended up checking the part numbers for the gasket for the 89 and it was listed from 89 -95 and also 98 - 01 Grizzly . I didn't check the base gasket numbers though.

I'd suggest if you use the 89 cylinder to use the 89 head also ..

I'm going to rebuild the 86 motor I have , with a big bore kit ; either a 635 kit or 675 kit , find a performace cam , new cam chain , with that new head I redid already , new clutch and when it's done, probably swap out the 89 motor with the 86 and see how much the difference is.

you can always check with your local dealer too , I'm sure they'd be able to help also.

since you already have the 89 cylinder , you may want to consider a big bore kit.
